Defensive Driving

Description
This course will provide drivers with some reminders of basic vehicle operation and then present a variety of defensive driving techniques. Practices such as entering an intersection, backing up and safe following distance will be demonstrated using text, narration, animation, and quiz questions for reinforcement.

 

Objectives
After completing this course the student will be able to:

  • Describe the responsibilities of being a professional driver
  • Explain some of the things drivers can do to perform at their best
  • Describe best practices for basic handling activities such as turning, braking and stopping the vehicle
  • Describe the proper procedure for entering an intersection
  • Explain how to safely change lanes
  • Describe how to determine and establish a safe following distance
  • List some of the ways to handle driving conditions such as night time, rain, ice and fog

 

Pretrip, HOS & Logbooks

Description
This course will cover the Regulations for Hours of Service in both Canada (2007 regulations) and the U.S (2005 regulations). Examples of how daily logs should be filled will be provided and exceptions to the Regulations will also be covered. Pre-trip planning suggestions and inspections regulations for both countries are also covered.

 

Objectives
After completing this course the student will be able to:

  • List the information needed to plan a trip and maximize fuel efficiency
  • Explain the importance of pre-trip and daily inspections
  • Describe the responsibilities of everyone involved in an inspectioin
  • List the main components of an inspection report
  • Explain the importance of Hours of Service (HOS) Regulations
  • List the hour restrictions for each duty type
  • Fill out a complete and correct daily log
  • Log the sleeper berth exception correctly
  • List the HOS exceptions for emergency and adverse driving conditions

 

Border Crossing

Description
This course provides truck drivers with an overview of the Canada - U.S. border, cross-border shipment requirements, and tips to assist with border crossing in either direction.

 

Objectives
After completing this course the student will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of the cross-border trucking industry
  • Describe the role of the key players in cross-border shipments
  • Name some of the programs in place to improve security and speed up the border crossing process
  • Explain the PARS/PAPS process
  • Describe the role of the driver in taking a FAST shipment across the border
  • List the requirements for Customs prenotification when transporting shipments both southbound and northbound across the Canada - U.S. border
  • Explain what drivers can and cannot do as Temporary Visitors for Business in the U.S. and Canada
  • List the personal identification that a driver should have to cross the border
  • Describe the shipment documentation that a driver needs to have ready for Customs officials

 

Transportation of Dangerous Goods

Description
This course will give drivers an overview of where to find the information they need in the TDG Clear Language Regulations, and provide guidelines for applying the Regulations.

 

Objectives
After completing this course the student will be able to:

  • Identify the possible hazards for each class of dangerous goods
  • Locate information from Schedules 1, 2 and 3 for a given dangerous good
  • Identify where the shipping document should be located
  • Determine the accuracy of a given shipping document
  • Identify the standard types of means of containment
  • Determine which dangerous goods are compatible
  • Determine which safety marks are required for a given dangerous good
  • Identify safe handling and loading procedures
  • Identify safe driving procedures
  • Determine when to report an accidental release of dangerous goods
  • Find information in the Emergency Response Guidebook for a given dangerous good

 

North American Standard Cargo Securement

Description
This course provides an introduction to the North American Cargo Securement Standard (Canadian NSC Standard 10 and 49 CFR 393.100 & 393.136).

 

Objectives
After completing this course the student will be able to:

  • Describe the effects and hazards of poor cargo securement
  • Describe the forces that act on cargo in a moving vehicle
  • Explain the cargo securement standard, its exceptions and general requirements
  • Describe the responsibilities of driver and carrier in securing cargo
  • Describe how vehicle structure, securing devices and/or blocking/bracing equipment can be used in a securement system
  • Define the Working Load Limit
  • Explain specific procedures for cargo with a tendency to roll or tip
